About

Who We Are
The Clara Mateo Garbageman’s Association is a charitable and professional fellowship of haulers and solid waste professionals serving the solid waste, recycling, and organics industries across San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Alameda Counties.
Our members include generations of haulers, recyclers, composters, and the many vendors who keep our operations running and who form the backbone of this essential industry.
Our Mission
CMGA’s mission is to bring together the people of the industry, promote education, support workforce development, and preserve the proud heritage of the Garbageman.
We celebrate the history and humanity of the trade while inspiring the next generation of sustainability leaders.

Why Clara Mateo?
The CMGA traces its roots to the early 1950s, when local refuse company owners “scavengers” began meeting monthly to share stories, resources, and camaraderie.
Over time, the Association grew to include recyclers, composters, and equipment and service vendors, united by a shared commitment to community and environmental stewardship.
Named in honor of the communities we serve—where working families and early haulers first came together—CMGA continues that legacy of solidarity, dignity, and service.
